I put my glass down. “Did you get the job?”
She stared at me. “Dani…”
“I mean properly. Is it done? Did Gareth sign it off?”
Kat looked at the water. Then she reached for her robe on the side, found her phone in the pocket and handed it to me, wet-thumbed. It was an email from the managing director. Subject: Associate Director, Calloway Digital: Confirmed. She’d been told that morning.
I read it twice. Then I handed it back, and found that I wasn’t angry. I wasn’t even surprised. I was just tired, and a bit sad, and still extremely turned on.
“I’m glad,” I said, and I meant most of it.
“I asked them to give you the Hargreaves account,” she said. “I asked on Thursday. I said you’d make a better lead than me.”
“You did?”
“They said they’d think about it.” She smiled, a bit crooked. “I figured I’d tell you after the weekend. Or after I’d kissed you.”
I sat in the steaming water, shaking my head. Then I leaned across and kissed her, deep and slow, her hand on the back of my neck, mine sliding down her wet stomach. We kissed until the water went cool and my hand was warm with her. She was breathing hard.
Then I sat back, climbed out and wrapped myself in my robe.
“Ask me again on Monday,” I said, “after I’ve seen how they decide.”
She watched me go. She was still grinning when I looked back.
