I held Lou’s hair and looked across at Gary. “Stay there,” I said. “You’ve got the best seat. Enjoy it.”
He swallowed. “Yes, ma’am.”
Lou laughed into my thigh. I pulled her up out of the pool and onto the sun lounger, laid her back, and finished what I’d started, my tongue on her clit and two fingers pushing slowly into her until she was clenching round them, her breath coming in short sobs. She tasted of salt and chlorine. She was so wet my wrist was soaked. I curled my fingers upward and she shouted my name and bucked off the cushion.
“Do it again,” she begged. “God, Sophie. Again.”
I did it again.
Gary made a noise like a man being slowly strangled. He was pumping his fist fast, eyes locked on my mouth, and as Lou came the second time he came too, thick spurts splashing his stomach, groaning into his own forearm.
Lou pulled me up for a long kiss, tasting of herself, then lay back with her hand over her heart.
“Well,” she said, after a long time. “That’s the best birthday present I’ve ever had. And it’s not even my birthday.”
Gary didn’t answer. I looked round. He was flat on his lounger, one leg dangling, mouth open, fast asleep.
“He does that,” said Lou. “Every time.”
We ate strawberries in the pool and watched him snore. At dawn I tiptoed home along the beach with a hickey, a number on a napkin and a very smug face.
I’d call that a perfectly respectable night. Gary would have called it a ten.
