I stood up. I’d gone red from my chest to my hairline. “I’m sorry,” I said. “I’m so sorry. I thought I could. I need to go.”
The sound stopped. Gary pulled out of Lou at once. He grabbed his shorts, Lou grabbed a towel, and the two of them were both on their feet before I’d got my sandals on, no anger in their faces. Only concern.
“Sophie, love,” Lou said. “It’s all right.”
“I feel stupid.”
“Don’t.” She wrapped the towel round her chest, and came and took both my hands. “You came because you wanted to. Going because you don’t is exactly as good. Nobody has done anything wrong tonight.”
Gary stood behind her, twisting his shorts in his hands. “Honestly, I’d be happy to just be your friend and get you a drink. Which is not something I say lightly.”
I laughed. It came out a bit wobbly. Lou kissed my forehead, my cheek, and then, very lightly, my mouth, and I felt it all the way down my body.
“Door’s open till Sunday,” she said. “No pressure. Ever.”
I walked back along the beach under a sky full of stars. At Cabana 12 I locked the door and lay on the bed, and my hand slid down without being asked. I thought about Lou’s mouth. About Gary’s cock sliding into her. About the way they’d looked at me. I came with their names on my lips.
In the morning someone had slid a note under my door.
Still here. Still open. L and G x
I read it three times. I didn’t knock.
