Sharing Is Caring: Mood Killer

“No condom,” I said. “Go bare.”

The words were out before I’d thought them through. I watched Ross’s face change, then Fiona’s.

“Wait,” Fiona said, propping herself up. “Really?”

“You said it was up to me.”

“I know, I just…” She looked at Ross, who had gone very still above her. “I didn’t think you’d actually say yes. That’s… that’s ours, Cal. That’s just ours.”

“Then why did you ask?”

“I don’t know! It was hot to ask!” She sat up properly, pulling her dress across her chest. “It’s different hearing you say it.”

Ross was already shuffling backwards off the sofa, holding a cushion over his lap. “I’m just going to,” he said, “give you two a minute.”

“Ross, stay…” Fiona started.

“Kitchen,” he said firmly. “I’ll be in the kitchen. Making tea. For a while.”

The kitchen door closed. Fiona and I stared at each other.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I thought that’s what you wanted.”

“I thought I did.” She rubbed her face. “I’m not angry. I’m just… the moment’s gone.”

It had. Completely. Ross drank his tea standing at our kitchen counter, said a very awkward goodnight, and left.

Fiona and I lay in bed afterwards and talked until three in the morning. About rules, about trust, about what was ours.

We didn’t have sex. But she fell asleep holding my hand, which felt like something.
