I said I’d sound her out first. Hannah sighed, kissed me and went to sleep. It seemed a sensible, gentle plan.
It was not a sensible, gentle plan.
I found Jess in the lounge that evening, cross-legged on the sofa with wine and a rom-com, in pyjama shorts and a vest. I sat down, cleared my throat, and tried to explain without actually saying anything.
“So Hannah and I,” I began, “have been talking. And we both think you’re really… lovely. And attractive. And that you might be, um, open to…”
Jess slowly put down her wine.
“Tom,” she said. “Are you asking me if I want a threesome with you and Hannah?”
“I’m not asking anything. I’m exploring.” I was sweating. “It’s a hypothetical.”
“It’s the most terrifying hypothetical of my life.” She was bright red, then she got the giggles, then she stopped. “Is this a test? Is she hiding behind the door?”
At which point the door swung open and Hannah, in her dressing gown, said, “I couldn’t sleep. How’s it going?”
Jess screamed into a cushion for ten solid seconds.
“I’d have said yes,” she said, finally, muffled. “If you’d both just asked me, like normal people. Not like this. I need to think. Not tonight.”
“Okay,” Hannah said gently. “Whenever.”
Upstairs, Hannah pushed me on the bed, straddled me and stuffed her knickers in my mouth.
“Muppet,” she whispered, and rode me until I couldn’t speak.
